I Can’t Is Not In My Vocabulary

Have you ever told yourself, “I can’t do something. I can’t ride a bike. I can’t play sports because I’m not good enough. I can’t go to college because I’m not smart enough”?  The words “I can’t” means you have an inability to do something. Well, if you say you can’t do something before you try it, how do you know if you have the inability to do it?  You have to know you have the inability to do something before you say you can’t. Too many people in this world say “I can’t” before they know whether or not they can’t do something.

Growing up, I was told that I wouldn’t make it in college. I wasn’t going to be able to graduate. However, what did I do? I didn’t say, “Okay, I can’t go to college, because I’m not smart enough so I am going to give up on my dream.”  I said, “No, I will go on to college, and I will try my best to see what will happen.”  I didn’t say I can’t, or that I won’t.

Growing up, I had shortened arms, and because of that I couldn’t throw a ball around that well. Though the words “I can’t” still were not in my vocabulary because I did my best and I tried. Even in my neighborhood, I played baseball, football and basketball. I went to a school for people with disabilities, and we had sports that were adapted for us, and I even played floor hockey. I also competed in the New York State Games for the Physically Challenged in track, field and swimming events. The word “can’t” was, is, and will never be in my vocabulary. Why? Because I do not want to say “I can’t” before I at least tried it one time. As I said earlier, can’t is the inability to do something. My parents allowed me to figure out for myself what I could and couldn’t do and couldn’t wasn’t much. Why? Because can’t wasn’t in my vocabulary. Is the word can’t in your vocabulary? If it is, ask yourself this question: Why is it? Think of it this way, if you’re using the word can’t, what are you limiting yourself from doing, becoming, or achieving in your life?

Philippians 4:13 says I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
